More Questions Than Answers

Great leadership isn’t about having all the answers…

Directors who look calm under pressure usually aren’t calm — they’re curious. Great leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about asking better questions than everyone else. Questions move you from reacting to steering.

I’ve put this small blog together in December,  on the 27th actually, as it’s after the family break, but now I’m itching to get back into work. However, winter is prime time for thinking, not just surviving. Put the kettle on, block a few hours, and brainstorm the questions your business needs next — before the new year noise kicks in.

Try these in 2026: What problem are we actually solving? What decision are we avoiding? What would make this 10% simpler? If this goes wrong, why will it go wrong? What would we do if we were brave and sensible?

And here’s the trap: if your team brings you every problem and you hand back every solution, you end up with a permanent “monkey on the shoulder” situation — all the monkeys, all the time. You become the bottleneck and the emotional recycling bin.

Better move: respond with questions that build ownership. “What have you tried?” “What do you recommend?” “What support do you need from me?”

Your job isn’t to carry every monkey. It’s to build a team that can handle their own.
